Prepare A Way for the Lord by Fr Pius Oyeniyi CSSR
The liturgy calls everyone to true repentance. Even the Pharisees and Sadducees came to be baptised when they heard the teaching of John. In the second reading, it is said that whatever is written in the former days is written for instruction so that by steadfastness and encouragement, we might hope. The reading continues by saying, ‘may the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ’. This means man is meant to glorify God. But how can you glorify Him when you do not know Him.
The first reading presents to us a new Earth where there shall be no pain or crying. It says, ‘The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid, and the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them. The cow and the bear shall feed; their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. The sucking child shall play over the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder’s den. They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.’ The scripture is giving us hope that this shall happen very soon. This is one hope that the scripture gives. On this day, Muslims can stay with Christians and there will be no hatred. Same with politicians. God is giving us a beautiful future but will we be able to see it?
The scripture tells us that we do not have the knowledge of the Lord and there is no wisdom. Looking at the world today, people act in self-interest. We need to make Heaven so as to see the day of the Lord. But the question is, with your way of life currently, will you be able to see the day of the Lord? The scripture is saying we should repent because the Kingdom of God is at hand. This means that the Son of God is coming. Repentance means you prepare a way for the Lord. This means you have a new heart and prepare yourself for God to dwell in you.
John said. ‘You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?’ A rot is coming. They rushed to John to baptise them so as to escape the rot. Are you running to the Lord? In Nigeria, we have brood of vipers. For example, in politics. We keep looking for material things when we are not sure of the next minute. If you have repented, then bear fruits that show repentance and do not presume to say that we have Abraham as our father and we are Catholics. Anybody can become a catholic and make heaven when we that have been baptised for ages will be denied heaven.
As we continue on our journey through life, we pray for the grace of God that we may not miss Heaven but dwell with him forever through Christ our Lord. Amen.
