Christ Call us to Follow Him – Homily by Fr Aloy Udo
Today is 3rd Sunday in ordinary time. Christ has called us to go to Him and to learn from Him as a follower and disciple. The prophet Isaiah’s words in the first reading were fulfilled not only in the work of Christ but in His dying and rising from the dead. Isaiah says, ‘The people that walked in darkness has seen a great light; on those who live in a land of deep shadow a light has shone. This light here is Christ. Christ has brought the light of truth and salvation to the people who were once in darkness.
The psalmist draws out everything we have in our minds and hearts. It says, ‘The Lord is my light and my help; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; before whom shall I shrink?’ These are questions that we need to ask ourselves daily so as to grow in confidence as Children of God.
The second reading talks about preaching the good news. This good news is what Christ began in the gospel reading which talks about His public ministry. Christ shows us that His baptism is important so as to begin his mission. He calls us to emulate this by being baptized as well. It was after this baptism that He left Nazareth and went to Galilee, towards the north of Palestine. On the way, He called several people who followed Him as His disciples. They left the occupation, family, etc, and followed Christ without looking back.
As we begin this new week, may we always respond to God’s call. May we always be ready to leave everything and follow Christ. May Christ grant us the strength to follow Him and may He continue to bless us through Christ our Lord. Amen.
